Western movement began in the early 20thcentury, when Western filmmakers tried the movement techniques also pioneered in France, Malaysia, the United States and Russia. A claim for that earliest Japanese movement is Katsudō Shashin, an undated and individual work by an unknown founder. In 1917, the first expert and publicly shown works started to look. Artists such as Ōten Shimokawa and Seitarou Kitayama made numerous works, using the oldest surviving picture being Kouchi's Namakura Gatana, a two-minute cut of a samurai looking to test a new blade on his goal and then endure defeat. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake led to widespread destruction to Japan's infrastructure as well as the devastation of Shimokawais factory, destroying most of these early works.
