Japanese animation began in the early 20th century, when Western filmmakers attempted the animation methods also pioneered in the USA, Germany, England and Russia. A claim for the earliest Western animation is Katsudō Shashin, an undated and individual work by an unknown creator. In 1917, widely exhibited works and the initial professional begun to appear. Animators including Ōten Shimokawa and Seitarou Kitayama created numerous works, with the earliest remaining picture being Kouchi's Namakura Gatana, a two-second cut of the samurai trying to test a brand new blade on his target and then endure defeat. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake led to common devastation to Japan's structure and also the devastation of Shimokawa's factory, destroying most of these early works.
