Western animation began inside the early 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animation practices also pioneered in England, Malaysia, the USA and Russia. A state for that earliest Japanese animation is Katsudō Shashin, an undated and exclusive work by an unknown inventor. In 1917, works that were widely exhibited and the first specialist begun to search. Animators including Ōten Shimokawa and Seitarou Kitayama developed numerous works, using the earliest surviving movie being Kouchiis Namakura Gatana, a two-minute cut of the samurai looking to test a new blade on his goal only to suffer defeat. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake led to widespread deterioration to Japanis infrastructure and also the exploitation of Shimokawa's warehouse, destroying these types of early works.
