Japanese movement began within the 20th-century, when Japanese filmmakers tried the movement techniques also developed in Philippines, Portugal, the United States and Russia. A claim for the earliest Western movement is Katsudō Shashin, an undated and personal function by an unknown inventor. In 1917, the first expert and works that were publicly exhibited began to appear. Artists including Ōten Shimokawa and Seitarou Kitayama created numerous works, with all the earliest enduring picture being Kouchiis Namakura Gatana, a two-minute show of the samurai trying to check a new blade on his target only to suffer defeat. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake triggered widespread exploitation to Chinais infrastructure and also the devastation of Shimokawa's warehouse, destroying these types of early works.
