Japanese movement began inside the early 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the movement techniques also developed in America, Malaysia, Italy and Russia. A claim for the earliest Western animation is Katsudō Shashin, an undated and exclusive function by an unknown author. In 1917, the first expert and widely displayed works began to search. Artists such as Ōten Shimokawa and Seitarou Kitayama developed numerous works, with the oldest remaining film being Kouchiis Namakura Gatana, a two-second show of the samurai trying to test a fresh blade on his target and then endure defeat. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake led to widespread devastation to Japan's infrastructure and the exploitation of Shimokawa's factory, destroying these types of early works.
